Hello everyone! I will be working on the sea4soCiety project investigating the role of dissolved organic compounds present in coastal ecosystems from tropical and temperate regions. More specifically, I will apply Mass spectrometry techniques to identify compounds found in pore water samples from salt marshes, seagrass meadows, mangroves and their impact on the Carbon cycle.

Currently, at AWI, I am engaged in the sea4society-Sargassum project. My core focus here is to integrate observational and laboratory data from previous experiments into enhanced model parameterizations. A significant part of my work includes developing numerical models for Sargassum farming in specific oceanic regions, aiming to assess both the CDR potential and the accompanying environmental impacts of this approach.

Maike Paul

Dr. Maike Paul is an expert on nature based flood defence with a focus on the interaction of coastal vegetation with hydro- and morphodynamics. This includes the effect of individual plants and canopy structures on hydro- and morphodynamics as well as the response of vegetation to hydrodynamic exposure. In her work she translates these natural processes into ecosystem services to integrate them in nature based flood defence.

As a marine biologist with a strong background in ecology and biochemistry, I work as a scientist in the work packages 1 & 2 and as a project manager in the organization of our research campaigns and in one way or another in the majority of all work packages. The work of myself and my colleagues at ZMT involves biochemical identification and determination of the stability of carbon compounds in the sediments of coastal vegetated ecosystems in order to assess the contribution of the different ecosystems to subsurface greenhouse gas storage.

My focus in sea4soCiety is on socio-ecological systems in Colombia and Malaysia. I will investigate public acceptance of CDR measures blending social science and ecology.

As a human geographer, the focus of my work is on human-environment relations and the governance of natural resources, especially in Southeast Asia. In the sea4soCiety context, I will investigate the regulatory framing of blue carbon potentials at the international study sites Malaysia and Columbia. Governance consists of de jure regulations defined by governmental actors as well as of de facto regulations shaped by societal actors and their everyday practices. My work in sea4soCeity aims at capturing the whole range of these governance aspects to provide an understanding of blue carbon initiatives in their local context.
